The UARA Top Ten Countdown - 8th Ronnie Bassett
Ronnie Bassett, Jr. is the youngest full time driver with the UARA for the 2010 season. Bassett is a confident and determined 14 years old who is in the ninth grade at school. He had a great 2010 season finishing second to Robert Johnson in the rookie points and 8th in the championship standings. The UARA had a strong rookie class in 2010 and four of these young guns landed in the top ten overall points.
Basset says, "I have learned a lot my first year in the late model class. We struggled the first six races. We made changes with crew chiefs and when B.J. Mackey started helping us we began to run better for the other half of the season. We ended up with the pole in Lonesome Pine and a second place finish there and some top 5's and then we had our share of bad luck. I have learned a lot racing with the older guys especially Coleman. My goal was to run with them and to receive there respect. And I think I did that. I have enjoyed racing. I would like to thank the UARA series for letting the younger kids run the division. I think my plans for next year are to come back and run with the UARA division again. I would like to thank my mom and dad and also B.J. Mackey, Marlowe Racing Chassis , Bassett Gutters and More Inc, and everyone that has help us through this year."
Ronnie Bassett, Jr. began racing when he was just eight years old in the Bandolero Bandits and has progressed from there. Bassett had 32 and 31 wins respectively in his 2006 and 2007 Bandolero seasons. He was at that time the Youngest Bandolero National Champion.
Bassett moved up to Late Model Stock cars in 2009 racing at Caraway Speedway.
He landed his first Late Model Stock win in his third event.
Bassett is the only rookie of 2010 to claim a pole position. He was Rookie of the Race on three different occasions. Bassett has shown maturity and growth throughout the year both on and off the track. Family is an important part of Bassett's life as is well shown at the speedways. When he isn't behind the wheel of his car or working on it, he can be found with his siblings and parents just enjoying family time.
Bassett had an up and down season in 2010 but shows great promise. His finishes for 2010 were: 22nd (1), 20th (1), 19th (1), 15th (1), 14th (2), 11th (2), 10th (1), 9th (3), 7th (1), 6th (1), 5th (1) and 2nd (1). Bassett did not collect a win but his presence was definitely know by his fellow competitors.
Bassett received the Racing Electronics award once, Sonic award two times, Performance Tees award one time, WP Racing Shocks three times, Joe Gibbs once and the DJ Safety award three times.
Look for Bassett to be a prominent factor in the racing for many years to come with his younger brother Dillon following close in his tracks.
