The UARA Top Ten Countdown - 5th Robert Johnson
Bringing home the fifth place in points was one very watched seventeen year old man named Robert Johnson. Johnson is the son of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee Junior Johnson and it would only be natural for the nation to take notice of the towering young man. The fans and media were not disappointed with what they saw from Johnson. With his famous dad, mom and sister in the background overlooking the process, Johnson proved he has the genes to get him up the racing ladder of success. Johnson was Rookie of the Race six times throughout 2010. Not only did Robert Johnson capture fifth place in the overall points, he captured the Rookie of the Year honors.
Prior to the season's start Junior was quoted as saying; “The pride I feel as a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame comes from recognition of what I have done in my racing career. With Robert, the pride comes from simply being a father. I admire my son’s initiative and ambition as he begins what I am sure will be a successful venture, especially one in racing, which has been my life. I am also proud to be a part of it and to share it with him”. When asked who’s driving style Robert’s reminded him of Junior said “A little bit of David Pearson but sometimes he gets real aggressive---so I like that part of it. But when you start getting real aggressive, you’re gonna have some accidents. That’s where they come from.” It was this aggressiveness however that brought Johnson home with his best ever UARA finish of second at Concord Speedway on August 7th. Along with his second place finish Johnson finished 4th (four times), 5th (once), 7th (once), 8th (twice), 9th (twice), 10th (once), 13th (once), 15th (once), 17th (once), and 19th (once)..
Robert Johnson quoted, "I really enjoyed racing the UARA series this year. Having raced in the Sportsman series at Caraway Speedway and in some assorted late model races last year, I know that the competition in the UARA series is the stiffest in late model racing. I enjoyed battling it out every week with the best drivers in late models, and although my plans are up in the air for next year, I will be looking forward to running as many UARA races as I can. My congratulations go out to Coleman Pressley, Robert Pressley and the 59 car crew. I would like to thank Carolina Carports for their support this year. I would also like to thank Todd Berrier, Will Spencer, and Ed Berrier for taking me on to drive at JKS Motorsports this year, and my crew for all of their hard work. My thanks also go out to Chevrolet and ECR engines for all of the great technical support they provided this year. It has been a great year in UARA and it would not have been possible without Wink and Kerry Bodenhamer, and all the UARA officials."
The Johnson team will be making some changes and moves during the winter months and will come back once again to the UARA as a strong competitive team with Robert Johnson and team aiming for the 2011 Championship. Wouldn't that be a great feat for the young Johnson, to be the first ever UARA Rookie of the Year to back it up with the series Championship title.
