THE UARA MELLING SELECT ROOKIE

BATTLE HEADED TO MOTOR MILE SPEEDWAY

By: Tracy Dean

The UARA-Stars has one of the best field of rookie drivers it’s seen in a long time. The Melling Select rookie points battle is heating up heading to Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, VA. There are eight rookie drivers that have competed in all three UARA races thus far.

K.C. Cunningham of Grafton, VA leads the rookie points battle and has received two Melling Select Rookie of the Race Awards . K.C. is tied for fifth in the overall points standings. One of K.C.’s goals this year is to finish in the top 10 in the overall UARA Points Championship. “We wanted to run the UARA for the exposure and the competition level,” said K.C. Cunningham. The Grafton High senior who just turned 18 last week is in his first full year driving a LMSC.

Barry Andrews of Hartsville, SC is in his first year of driving a LMSC. Barry competed in late model trucks at Myrtle Beach Speedway over the past few years, he also won several of those races. “We feel really good about the upcoming races, the first two races of the season we ran our old truck engine,” said Barry Andrews. “With our new motor we feel like we can compete a little better.” Barry is holding down second in the rookie points and is very pleased to be tenth in overall points.

Justin Hill of Concord, NC holds down the third spot in the rookie points and is 14th in overall points. Justin is coming off a good run at Myrtle Beach Speedway finishing 9th.

Scooter Hillis of Lebanon, Tenn. is 4th in the rookie points and 15th overall. Scooter won Melling Select Rookie of the Race at Myrtle Beach Speedway with a 8th place finish.

Jake Crum of Statesville, NC is 5th in the rookie points and 16th overall. I caught up with Jake this past weekend running a WKA National Karting Event in Aynor, SC. The 14 yr. old Crum is in his first year of LMSC, “I want to race Nascar(Nextel Cup) when I’m old enough,” said Jake Crum. “We would like to run another season in UARA for the experience in full size cars.”

Zeke Shell of Limestone, Tenn. is 6th in the rookie points and 17th overall. Zeke’s best finish of the season was 15th at Myrtle Beach Speedway.

Clay Jones of Goldsboro, NC is currently 7th in the rookie points and 18th overall. Clay has had some bad luck in the first three events. Clay got caught up in a lap car spin while leading at Hickory. I know this team is looking forward to getting things turned around this year.

Lucas Ransone of Madison, NC, is 8th in the rookie points and 21st overall. For more information go to www.uara-stars.com. Don’t miss the racing action this weekend April 29th at Motor Mile Speedway. Racing starts at 4 p.m.
