Jamey Caudill dominates UARA STARS, R Kirk Leone 200 at Southern National Speedway
Kenly, NC (September 3) – Four Oaks, NC driver Jamey Caudill made the return trip to his home track, Southern National Speedway, payoff with a dominating performance in collecting his third UARA STARS victory of the 2005 season in the R Kirk Leone 200 and close to within six points of point leader Matt McCall.
McCall collected his third SUNOCO pole award of the season and was in position to extend his sixty-two point lead with another win or a top five finish. Caudill started on the outside front row and at the drop of the green both drivers raced side by side into turn one. Caudill would get the advantage going into turn three and would go on to lead all 200 laps. McCall's night would come up short when his car erupted into flames going into turn three.
Early race cautions keep the field tight, a hard charging Danny O’Quinn started working in the high side and was making his way through the field from his ninth place starting spot. Close to the half way mark, O’Quinn had made his way to third. Tony Grady, Kyle Grissom and Ross Furr were all making there way to the front as the race went along.
Grady had pulled him self up to forth and while attempting to pass O’Quinn, Grady’s car slid side ways causing himself and O’Quinn to spin and bring out the caution. O’Quinn continued on but Grady was unable to get his ride fired back up before losing two laps and taking him out of contention for his first UARA STARS victory.
O’Quinn rebounded and came back to finish sixth and earn the Holley Performance Performer of the race. Grissom a RH2 way Rookie contender made his way up from his eighth starting spot and stormed his way to a strong second place finish. Ross Furr another RH2 way Rookie contender charged his way up from his fourteenth starting spot to a strong fifth place finish. Gaining eleven spots earned Furr the East TN Trailers Hard Charger of the race award.
Caudill’s win has now put him a tie with 2003 UARA STARS Champion Lee Tissot with six wins a piece. Caudill leads the way in SUNOCO Pole awards with eight career poles.
The points chase remains tight all the way back through the top ten. Robert Elliott has gained more points than any other driver in the last three races. RA Brown and Keith Stiltner are now tied for third with Elliott in fifth followed by Grissom, Grady, Ashley Huffman, and Mark King. These drivers are separated by only fifty points.
UARA STARS drivers will now begin preparation for the Food City 150 presented by Frito Lay at Bristol Motor Speedway. An open practice will be this Wednesday September the seventh for drivers that will be competing Saturday September 24th.
