Hendersonville, NC
Paddy Rodenbeck Wins The Denver Marine,
Performancenter, 3V Performance 150
The place is the famed Hickory
Motor Speedway and the action along with the
temperature was hot, hot, hot. Paddy Rodenbeck set
the Sunoco Pole time of 15.315 and kept a blistering
pace all night long. Brandon McReynolds was the KLB
Race Cars & Parts outside pole winner at 15.333.
Twenty four cars hit the blistering grid, the
qualifying was close and the field is set.
The Pro Challenge cars lead off
the evening activities with young Meghan Dillner
winning the pole at 16.002 followed by Stephen
Bergh, Jr. on the outside with a 16.068. Dillner
took the lead on lap one and she had determination
and stamina to remain there for the entire race.
Her win was not a given however. Bergh fought her
tooth and nail for the lead but Dillner wasn’t
giving an inch. They had the crowd in a roar and a
lot of women shouting “You go girl”. Bergh put the
pressure on Dillner with a vengeance with John
Hilliker in hot pursuit. It was a battle royal and
on lap 22 Bergh spins in turn four. He goes to the
rear and will come back to a fourth place finish.
Early in the race Kyle Benjamin and Brady Boswell
spin in turn two but it was definitely Dillner’s
night to shine and she did it in great style.
The Tarheel Vintage Racers were
next on the grid with former UARA regular Sam Beam
and his father Alex being a part of the teams. The
car of Alex Beam must have suffered mechanical
problems and didn’t start the event along with
fellow competitor Rick Pridmore who suffered a tire
problem prior to the show. This is a fun loving
group of racers that will definitely bring a smile
to your face. Their replica cars will bring back
flashbacks of the past. Sam Beam was the flag to
flag leader for the TVRA cars.
The STARS take to the grid for
the Denver Marine, Performancenter , 3V
Performance 150 and it is nose to tail action
all through the field. With Rodenbeck out front the
chase is on. Jamey Caudill makes a move from fourth
to third by lap six. Matt McCall will make a pass on
Kyle Grissom followed by Andy Loden a few laps
later.
The freight train rolls and
further back in the pack Darrell Wallace, Jr. Joey
Bryant and Clint Mills are all scrambling for
position. Wallace will pass Bryant then a few laps
later Mills will do the same. Mid pack Garrett
Campbell passes Jordan McGregor. Two laps later
Bryant will make a quick trip to the pits. Mills
appears to be the man on the hunt as he later passes
Coleman Pressley then several laps later Campbell.
At lap 50 it is still Paddy
Rodenbeck showing the way followed by Brandon
McReynolds, Caudill, McCall, Loden, Grissom, Roger
Lee Newton, Chris Lawson, Richard Boswell II and
Corey LaJoie. The field would have a long green
period until lap 65 the cars of Lawson, Bryant and
Don Satterfield spin in turn two. Racers are going
every way but straight to avoid this spin.
These cars plus Matthew Godley,
Owen Kelly, Grant McGinnis, Brennan Poole, Campbell
and Coleman Pressley will head to the pits during
the caution. Pit road is super active and tempers
are getting edgy.
The green flies on lap 71 and
caution 2 flies on lap 81 for debree on the track.
By this time McCall has passed McReynolds for second
and he has a very high line on the track with his
sights set on Rodenbeck. Caudill also passes
McReynolds. By lap 80 Caudill has moved to second
with McCall third followed by Andy Loden and Kyle
Grissom who have also made a pass on
McReynolds. On Lap 113 Loden is
heading for the pits with accelerator linkage
problems. Loden will remain there for a few laps
when return to the field only to go back to the pits
a few laps later. Loden will end his great run at
this time.
Two more quick back to back
cautions fly as Grant McGinnis spins in turn 2. The
field goes green and right back yellow as Clint
Mills and Joey Bryant wreck coming out of turn
four. McCall passes Caudill back for second place
on lap 102.
Lap 120 has Rodenbeck, McCall,
Caudill, Grissom, Newton, Boswell, LaJoie, Rookie
Michael Rouse, Darrell Wallace, Jr. and Jordan
McGregor as the top ten. Caution five flies as
McGinnis spins on the front stretch.
Caudill passes McCall for
second and Boswell passes LaJoie for sixth. Boswell
begins to slow on lap 134 but will remain on the
track. Kyle Grissom will slow to a stop in turn
three after suffering a blown tire on lap 145.
Grissom’s hopes for a promising top five finish will
end at this time. The caution will fly for the
sixth time and Boswell will come to the pits during
this time. The field will be put under the red to
get the Grissom car off the track and it will be a
green white checker finish once again for the
UARA-STARS.
Rodenbeck will come home as the
second repeat winner of 2009 for his efforts.
Kowalsky Machine is the Comp Cam Engine Builder of
the race. Rodenbeck will also receive the RE
Suspension 1st place award along with the
Performance Tee award and

Michael Rouse will be the
Chassis Specialty Rookie of the Race and Kyle
Grissom will receive the ARP Hard Luck award after
having such a great run to have it all end in the
pits with his tire problem.
It must have been something in
the air with three races all having flag to flag
winners.
Prior to the UARA event a
chassis dyno was brought into the track. It had
been pre-determined that the race winner along with
the highest finishing crate, Dodge, Chevy and Ford
engined cars would go to that dyno post race. That
put Rodenbeck in line as winner, Pressley as the
crate motor, McReynolds representing Dodge and
Caudill as Chevrolet. There was no Ford available
at this event for testing.
